Art in therapy
Art in therapy acknowledges creative art-making as a non-verbal medium to help individuals process emotions, explore identity, and resolve psychological conflict. By externalizing internal experiences, it bypasses the limitations of spoken language to facilitate insight and healing. The focus is entirely on the therapeutic process and personal meaning of the image, rather than formal artistic skill or technique. Materials like paint, clay, or collage allow access to unconscious material or emotions that feel too complex to articulate in words. Therapy unfolds through a dynamic between the patient, the therapist, and the artwork itself - which acts as a safe container or bridge for difficult feelings.
Individuals who are interested in this modality may choose to create images in sessions, or bring art made elsewhere to sessions. No prior experience or artistic talent is needed.
